Desi Utsava gets under way with ‘Mudiyettukalam' performance

Udupi: The four-day “Desi Utsava” began here with the performance of the ritual art form of “Mudiyettukalam” of Kerala by Panayur Vasudevan and party at the Muddana Mantapa on MGM College campus here on Thursday.
The utsava is jointly organised by the Regional Resources Centre for Folk Performing Arts, Yakshagana Kendra, and the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation.
The utsava aims at analysing and finding similarities and differences between various art forms of Tulunadu and Kerala.
Besides demonstrations, there would be discussions by expert resource persons on art forms such as “Mudiyettukalam”, “Theiyyam”, and “Valiyanaga Kalam”. Inaugurating the utsava, Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha said: “Art forms are the only forms which help us understand ourselves. All art forms in different parts of the country have a common point.”
She said the harvest festival in various parts of the country celebrated the joy that the harvesting brought. “When we study art forms, we get a better knowledge of our past,” she said. People normally gave importance to culture, when they were economically well-off. There were several cultural activities such as performances of art forms or festivals taking place in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. But this was not the case in north Karnataka, Ms. Hemalatha said.
Art critic A. Ishwarayya said that most art forms originated from religious rituals. But some of them had retained their religious character. These art forms reflected the religious beliefs prevailing in the period in which they originated. Kerala and Tulunadu had several cultural exchanges, including in the field of art forms, he said.
Heranje Krishna Bhat, Director of Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Samshodhana Kendra, welcomed the gathering.
Administrative Officer of the Academy of General Education H. Shantharam presided over the inaugural function.
Muralidhar Nempu proposed a vote of thanks.
Folklore expert Raghavan Payyanadu and Principal of MGM College P.V. Gowda were present.
